SMART-IS - Smart Materials and Structures for Intelligent Systems

SMART-IS Seasonal

I EDITION | ON SITE | APPLICATION

Deadline for Registration
February 22nd, 2027
Period
April 12th - 16th, 2027

Learning objectives

The Seasonal School SMART-IS will introduce participants to the timely and strategic topic of smart materials and structures and their role in enabling next-generation solutions for mechatronics, robotics, and energy harvesting. Participants will gain an integrated understanding of how the physical principles governing smart materials can be translated into the design, modelling, and experimental validation of actuators, sensors, and energy conversion systems. The School aims to develop both advanced technical knowledge and a system-level, design-oriented mindset, fostering the ability to critically analyse emerging technologies and research challenges.

Teaching methodologies

Students will find an interactive and cross-disciplinary learning environment that combines:

•             interactive lectures with continuous discussion,

•             hands-on laboratory activities on materials, devices, and prototypes,

•             project work on real research and engineering case studies,

•             guided analysis of scientific literature and applications.

This blended approach is designed to actively involve participants, stimulate critical thinking, and strengthen the connection between theory, modelling, and experimental practice.

Target participants

The Seasonal School is primarily intended for:

  • PhD students,

  • MSc (Master’s level) students,

with a background in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, materials science, applied physics, or related disciplines.

Participants are expected to have basic knowledge in at least one of the following areas:

  • solid mechanics and/or electromagnetism,

  • mathematical modelling of physical systems,

  • materials science.
